current music: kutless – the disease & the cure

Hello everyone and happy holidays. Sorry for lack of updates here but i’ve been realitvely busy. Melanie and me were in Kokkola for Christmas. We drove there on tuesday morning arriving there a bit after noon. Was nice to spend christmas back home. Got some great presents including an iPod Nano (8gt) and NHL09 for PC/DVD, so as i got home yesterday i had lots to do with uploading music and cover images plus testing the new hockey game. I was also busy putting Melanie’s new laptop up and running (which i got her for christmas) and today i got the WLAN transmitter for it so now we can surf wherever in this big house. I don’t know when i wrote the last time so sorry if i repeat or forget something. The last evening in Kokkola (which was Saturday) i went to Nightclub Calle to see Kokkola’s blues-pride “Wentus Blues Band” perform live and boy, oh boy, did they rock the house. The show was amazing and i have a photogallery from the show on facebook, so please go and check it out. During our stay in Kokkola we managed to go to the best mexican restaurant in Finland. Of course i’m talking about the one, the only, Pedrina’s – Bar & Cantina (where’s my sponsorship gift certificate?). First time on Tuesday just me and Melanie and then on Saturday with Melanie and my sister. Christmas eve was first spent at my sister’s place when Santa Claus came there with gifts for the kids after which Melanie and I headed to our parents place where my relatives where and we sang and opened presents. (Sorry this post isn’t really chronological and a bit messy, but live with it). I will visit my friend Tapani later today to play some PS3 and listen to music and basically just chill and hang out. But i think i’m ready for this time, pictures from Kokkola coming soon, most probably onto a gallery on facebook. Until next time, take care and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

current music: kutless – the disease & the cure

Hey there everybody and good morning. Woke up about 1,5 hours ago and took an morning bath and soon im heading off to the store and then to work. Yesterday i was at S-Osis after work for some live rock music. Endrive’s ex-drummer “Pete” played there with his current band ‘Staying Under’ and i gotta say i was pleasantly surprised by their musicianship and Pete’s especially, he really knows how to rock those drums, wish i knew. My friend Teemu (of Starlight Nine) is coming to Turku on Wednesday most probably and stay here for a few days and hang out, will be very cool. Yesterday when i was supposed to go to my evening shift i decided to leave earlier to go to the city quickly before work to look at/get some presents, but i had left an ‘apparatus’ inside my car on and the car battery was dead, great. I called Jukka (Mel’s ex-aupair dad) and he came along and helped me bringing my ‘Green Tiger’ (car) back to life. Work yesterday was extremely laidback and at some points boring, only worked for the first hour, the remaining seven hours i didn’t do anything, atleast not work realted. Easy money i suppose. Now i will go and get ready for shopping and work, see you soon again!

current music: sick city – islands

Hey everyone, just a quick update about yesterday. Went to Klubi to see some swedish hardcore acts in action. First band was hardcore/punk act “Victims”, whose music wasn’t really my ‘cup of tea’ but still sounded good, raw and energetic.

Second band was “Burst” and their music was a bit more diverse with clean vocals involved in the midst of brutal screaming, more technicality and progressive elements, they were really great, bought a t-shirt of them. Should try to hunt down their record.

current music: sick city – islands

Hey everyone. Yesterday was Finland’s birthday and our beloved home country turned 91 (est. 1917), so congratulations. I got home this morning from the last nightshift of this ’round’. Melanie and me went today to buy the first christmas presents. Tomorrow Melanie, me and Johanna (the current aupair where Mel did hers) are going to Salo for shopping and just look around. Never really seen the city. so that’ll be interesting. I will at the same time go to Nokia to take care of some business, i will talk more about that some other time. In an hour i’m going to Klubi here in Turku to listen to two Swedish hardcore bands “Burst” (headliner) and The Victims play live. Burst is somewhat familiar to me from before and i’m excited to see them play. I hope there will be enough people, it’s Sunday so you never know. On Tuesday i have my final German lessons before Christmas and they then of course continue in January 2009. Next week i will get two items in the mail. First being the “new” EP by finnish punk band “Kätyrit”, their drummer is sending it t o me for free. Deep Insight toured with them in northern Finland in 2004 (while i was in the band, naturally). The second item is a DVD of “Starlight Nine” performing live in Salo, don’t remember the date. This was our secodnd vocalist, Pirkka’s, debut show with the band. There was a rock marathon and a production company filmed all the bands and the ones who wanted a DVD of it will get, so i thought it would be a nice piece of memory to have, so i’m getting it finally. If it’s good quality i will put some of it (if not everything) on Pooki TV; need to get permissions for that, but i dont think anyone has anything against it. Now i will go on with the evening and i will get back to you soon and a new “Albums that Matter” blog, i hope you’ve “enjoyed” them. Please also remember to go to Callisto’s myspace profile to listen to the new song “Covenant Colors”, it’s really amazing and im SO waiting for their upcoming album “Providence”, will be the top releases of next year for sure!

Hello. Just wanted to share one thing with you quickly this morning. If you happen to like the band Callisto or love good music in general, i recommend you scoop over to Callisto’s MySpace profile and give their new song “Covenant Colours” a try. It’s the first single off of their upcoming third full length entitled “Providence” to be released in Finland on February 18th.

This is my blog series “Albums that Matter”, where i go through albums (in NO particular order) which litterally has mattered in my life.

P.O.D. – The Fundamental Elements of Southtown (October, 1999)

A friend of a friend of mine had some compilation cd which included “Southtown” by POD and i immediately fell in love. Was really into rap at the moment, but i also loved rock so the blend of these two were new to me. This was in the fall of 1999. I quickly got this album and i was in for a life changing journey. Noah “Wuv” Bernardo Jr. has been my major drum influence since these time, simply love his groovy funky beats blended in with lots of passion and agression. Even to this day people say i look like Wuv when i play, and sadly, it’s so true, haha.

What i also love about this band, and this record, is the guitar work of mr. Marcos Curiel, innovative and creative effect stuff. Also the lyrics and vocal performance of Sonny Sandoval is simply beautiful. Even to this day i put on this album from time to time and it takes me back in time and puts a smile on my face. This is the ultimate P.O.D. album, their major label debut on Atlantic Records entitled “The Fundamental Elements of Southtown”.

This album contains lots of killer tunes like “Southtown“, “Freestyle“, “Lie Down” and “Outkast” plus reggae flavoured “Set Your Eyes to Zion” and an U2 cover of “Bullet the Blue Sky. I truly recommend this classic album to everyone! Passion above all!”

“i’m an outcast, but don’t count me out…”

current music: the classic crime – closer than we think (playing in my head)

Greetings my dear readers. Been a while again, seems to have become an tradition, but better late than never… right? My last long time off from work was (for the most part) spent with an incredible headache/migrane, whatever it was – it was hurting. Yesterday evening it finally gave up. On Friday evening i went to Klubi to see ‘Blindine’, ‘Novembersoundsbetter’ and ‘Rites of the Youth’ perform live. Swedish ‘Meleeh’ was supposed to play but they had cancelled their tour due to sickness. Today my work continued again with a laaaaazy morning shift, but for tomorrow it is expected to be back to “normal”. In case you haven’t noticed i started a new ‘regular’ post about albums that have played (and still does) a major role in my life as a music fanatic. I have many many albums on my mind and soon i’ll let you know the next one. Speaking of music, i really miss drumming. We’ve been without a practise place for over a month and it’s really annoying. I surely hope something will come up soon, real soon. Now i will go back to my evening and soon i’m off to bed, early awakening tomorrow again. See ya!
